Ahead of a meeting of European and Arab foreign ministers, Germany's foreign minister has pledged support for a Syria's new united opposition. Guido Westerwelle said that the new national coalition must now prove itself.

Petraeus scandal widens to US Afghanistan general
The scandal surrounding former CIA chief David Petraeus' extramarital affair has widened to include top US commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen. A Pentagon source cited "inappropriate communications."

After years of speculation over what caused Yasser Arafat's death, an investigative committee has begun working to exhume the former Palestinian leader's body. Officials plan to test his remains for poison.

Eurogroup ministers split on next step for Greece
Eurozone finance ministers have not reached an agreement on the next tranche of bailout funds for Greece. The group is also split on whether or not to give the debt-ridden country an extended deadline for budget cuts.

German newspaper FR files for insolvency
One of Germany's key newspapers the Frankfurter Rundschau has filed for insolvency after years of falling circulation. The left-liberal paper was one of the first granted a license by American occupiers in 1945.

EU Parliament walks away from budget talks
The European Parliament has refused to negotiate further on the 27-member bloc's 2013 budget. It criticized member states, saying they had failed to fund shortfalls which have been amassed in the course of this year.

French president defends his economic course
French President Francois Hollande has cited economic trends in his country as evidence that his policies are credible. Despite a slump in ratings in his first six months, he said success would emerge wihin five years.
Aviation
Wage deal ends Lufthansa cabin crew strike
Labor unions at German airline Lufthansa have agreed to a cabin staff wage deal envisaging higher pay in exchange for more flexible work schedules. The deal was brokered by an arbiter after a massive strike this summer.
