Cheat Sheet - Obama Was Upstaged

Cheat Sheet: Morning

February 13, 2013
STATE OF THE UNION

The president used his State of the Union address to vow to protect working-class Americans. But he had to compete with a violent confrontation in California, writes The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz. Plus, Caitlin Dickson fact-checks the State of the Union, Daniel Gross takes on Obama's pivot to the left on the economy, Michelle Cottle on the winsome Rubio's response, and more Daily Beast contributors weigh in.

SHOOTOUT

The manhunt for a rogue ex-police officer in Los Angeles came to an apparent end Tuesday after he holed up in a cabin that then went up in flames. Police are now trying to determine if the human remains found at the cabin belong to Dorner. The Daily Beast's Christine Pelisek reports.

VALETE

Vive il papa. Prior to giving what is likely to be his last public Mass as pope, Benedict XVI said on Wednesday he had resigned for the "good of the church" and he thanked his supporters for their "love and support." He said he is resigning due to declining health and because he could no longer perform his duties as effectively, but said he hoped the prayers of the church would sustain him. Benedict, 85, announced on Monday that he would resign effective February 28, making him the first pope in nearly 600 years to step aside. The Ash Wednesday mass had to move to St. Peter's Basilica to accommodate the large crowds.

RESPONSE

Opposing Obama sure can make you thirsty. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio delivered the GOP response to the president's State of the Union on Tuesday night, attacking Obama on taxes and government spending—but Rubio earned instant Internet fame for taking a drink of water during the televised speech. Rubio, considered an early contender for president in 2016, delivered a bilingual address that touched on his own working-class background as the child of Cuban immigrants. But the instant meme reaction came when he tried to sneak a drink of water from a bottle off camera in the middle—although Rubio himself took it in stride, tweeting a photo of the water bottle after the speech.

CONSPIRACY

Britain's metropolitan police have arrested six former News of the World journalists in relation to a new investigation into phone hacking at the now-defunct newspaper. Two of those arrested currently work at the tabloid's sister publication, The Sun. Police said the suspects are believed to be part of a conspiracy to hack into voicemails of new victims who have not even been notified yet. None of those nabbed have been arrested before, and all but one are being detained in London.
