Horrifying

A man believed to be a British soldier was beheaded by two men believed to be Islamic extremists wielding machetes. The suspects have been shot been by police. Peter Jukes reports from London.

SCOLDING

Fed chief Ben Bernanke has been working like a dog to keep the economy moving, he told Congress today, but they're not pulling their weight. He's absolutely right, writes Daniel Gross.

Boston Bombing

The FBI has confirmed that an FBI agent shot and killed a man connected to Boston bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev last night. Ibragim Todashev, 27, was allegedly questioned by the agency about his relationship with Tsarnaev, whom he reportedly knew through martial arts. The FBI said in a statement that agents were interviewing Todashev "when a violent confrontation was initiated by the subject." Todashev was killed, and an agent was injured. Friends of Todashev have confirmed that he was from Chechnya and knew Tamerlan. While the FBI said Todashev is not suspected in the marathon bombing, they are investigating his role in a 2011 triple homicide. One of those victims was also a friend of Tamerlan's.

HER LIPS ARE SEALED

You're going to have to do better than that, Lois. The IRS official at the center of the scandal over the agency's scrutiny of conservative groups pleaded the Fifth during Wednesday's hearing. Lois Lerner said she did nothing wrong or illegal and gave no false or misleading information to officials before invoking her constitutional right to remain silent in the face of lawmakers' questions. Lerner admitted to the agency's targeting of conservative groups two weeks ago and apologized for its actions. The revelation has implicated the Obama administration for having knowledge of the IRS's conduct.

LOSING HOPE

The frantic search for survivors in Moore, Oklahoma, may be coming to a futile end. No new survivors or bodies have been discovered since Monday—the day the deadly EF5 tornado ripped through the town. So far the death count stands at 24, a number revised from an earlier erroneous report of 91. Moore's mayor, Glenn Lewis, does not expect the death toll to increase. "I think that will stand," he told reporters. An estimated 2,400 homes were damaged when the mammoth tornado barreled through Oklahoma on Monday, directly impacting 10,000 residents.
