DAY ONE

In the first day of his murder trial, George Zimmerman's own words were thrown back at him by the prosecution: 'Those assholes, they always get away.' Jacqui Goddard reports from court on the emotional opening statements, Zimmerman's muted reaction in court, and what Trayvon Martin's parents had to say.

DOUBLE AGENT?

The South China Morning Post reported on Monday that fugitive leaker Edward Snowden said he had taken a job as an independent contractor at Booz Allen Hamilton for one reason: to gather information about NSA's surveillance program. Snowden's current whereabouts are unknown, but he is believed to have left Hong Kong on Sunday for Moscow and then rumored to have boarded a flight to Havana, Cuba, with his final destination likely to be Ecuador, where he is reportedly seeking asylum. Snowden has been charged with espionage by the U.S. government, who is seeking his extradition. Meanwhile in the U.S., more than 100,000 have signed a petition to the White House to pardon Snowden.

Anticlimactic

In a surprise move, the Supreme Court on Monday deferred a decision on affirmative action, kicking the case back down to a lower court. The Daily Beast's Adam Winkler on the internal court politics behind the ruling and what it might reveal about Chief Justice John Roberts's thinking.

CONVICTED

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has reportedly been convicted of abusing his power by engaging in sex-for-hire and sentenced to seven years in prison and barred from holding political office. The ruling will not be implemented, however, until Berlusconi has had the opportunity to appeal.

LOST

Washington is riveted by a fugitive search—for Rusty the panda, that is. The red panda went missing from the National Zoo on Sunday night around 6 p.m., and the zoo said it would be "unusual for Rusty to wander far from his home range, in this case, his exhibit." "Animal care staff have been combing the trees around the zoo since 8 a.m. He could be sick and hiding, or someone could have taken him," zoo officials tweeted. Zoo officials also warned that as cute as Rusty is, he is still a wild animal and should not be approached.
