AFTER THE CRASH

Dozens of Chinese students were on that flight, bound for summer camp. Two died. Several were injured. And many more are stuck in a San Jose hotel. The Daily Beast's Christine Pelisek reports.

NOT SO FAST

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood on Tuesday rejected the president's timetable for elections, saying that a vote next year would bring the country "back to square one." The move came one day after 51 of ousted President Mohamed Morsi's supporters were killed when the Egyptian Armed Forces allegedly opened fire on morning prayers, although the army insisted it was responding to an armed altercation. Interim President Adly Mansour on Monday called for a panel to be formed within 15 days to review the Constitution, constitutional amendments to be finalized within four months, parliamentary elections to be held in early 2014, and finally, presidential elections in about a year. Morsi, the country's first democratically elected president, still has supporters within the Muslim Brotherhood, his political party.

ZERO OPTION

The U.S. is considering withdrawing all troops from Afghanistan after next year, American and European officials said on Tuesday. The "zero option" comes as President Obama has reportedly become increasingly frustrated with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who accused the U.S. last month of trying to negotiate a separate peace with the Taliban and its backers in Pakistan. The U.S. has given a 2014 deadline to drastically scale down troops in Afghanistan and leave just security forces in that country, but the idea of full withdrawal similar to what was done in Iraq has been gaining momentum. "If you listen to some people in Washington, it is maybe now being seen as a realistic path," one senior Western official in Kabul told The New York Times.

THEY'RE OK

"I may have been through hell and back, but I am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face and my head held high and with my feet firmly on the ground," said Michelle Knight, one of three Ohio women who were held captive for a decade each before escaping in May. The three women—Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus—posted a video on YouTube Monday night, appearing healthy and grinning as they thank their supporters. "Everyone who has been there to support us has been a blessing," said Berry, whose daring escape with her 6-year-old daughter led to the trio being rescued. Ariel Castro, 52, has been charged with 329 counts of kidnapping, rape, beatings, and more—and only covers five years of the women's captivity.

TENSE YEAR

Since Chen's dramatic escape from China and arrival at NYU, the activist found himself at odds with the university that took him in, his supporters tell The Daily Beast's Josh Rogin.
