Mystery solved? Mosquitos really do prefer to bite some people over others—and Dr. Leslie Vosshall is figuring out why. The Daily Beast's Josh Dzieza checks out Vosshall's New York laboratory, where volunteers stick their hands into boxes full of swarming mosquitoes in the name of science.

RECKONING

The trial of alleged Fort Hood mass shooter Maj. Nidal Hasan began under heavy security on Tuesday, with a perimeter of stacked shipping containers and heavily armed guards. Over the next several weeks, Hasan, who is representing himself, will defend himself against charges that he deliberately targeted and killed 13 military personnel and injured 30 more when he opened fire at Fort Hood in 2009. The Daily Beast's Michael Daly on the long-suffering victims.

IN RECOVERY

George W. Bush is "in high spirits" following a successful surgery Tuesday morning. The 67-year-old, who, other than a low heart rate diagnosis, was pretty healthy during his presidency, was undergoing an annual physical Monday when his doctor discovered a blocked artery. During Tuesday's surgery they inserted a stent, or small tube, in the artery to open it up. A Bush spokesman said the former president is "eager to return home tomorrow and resume his normal schedule on Thursday."

COMEBACKS

We feel you, Les Moonves—everyone is blowing up without being able to watch the latest Under the Dome. The CBS CEO Tuesday publicly slammed Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt's proposal to end the feud between the two companies, which has caused the cable company to cut CBS in New York, Dallas, and Los Angeles. On Monday Britt's letter went public. It called for an end to the company's blackout, but did not offer up any real proposal. Moonves fired back Tuesday, writing that he was "surprised to get your letter yesterday, since I haven't spoken to you in more than a week." Moonves called Britt's letter "dishonest" and his "proposal" as "nothing more than an attempt to muddy the water and confuse the public discussion." Yikes, imagine how ugly things will get when football is back.

DIPLOMACY

Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham, acting as emissaries to Egypt, told the newly installed military leadership there that they must release political prisoners, like the jailed leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood. "In a democracy you have to sit down and talk to each other," Graham said. "It's impossible to talk to somebody who's in jail." Both senators were clear that they thought the military's seizure of power was a coup and stressed that the next step needed to be a democratic process to decide new leadership.
