The New York real estate mogul and philanthropist—who is personally paying death benefits to the families of soldiers who have died on duty since the government shutdown began last week—lashed out against partisan politics in an interview at The Daily Beast's Hero Summit on Thursday. Plus, full coverage from the event, including Sen. John McCain, Jerry Bruckheimer, and others.

Meeting Partway

A short-term solution is better than no solution at all, right? GOP leaders are pushing for a short-term increase in the country's borrowing limit to calm nervous financial markets. The proposed resolution wouldn't contain any conservative hobby-horses. Now, Speaker John Boehner has to convince his rank-and-file members to get on board, in which case there might be a floor vote on the measure later Thursday. It remains to be seen if the seditious conservatives in the House will agree to make the offer, or whether President Obama, who has insisted on a full solution to the government shutdown, will be tempted to accept it.

Scary

A terrifying new study released Thursday predicts that by 2047, the planet will see historic temperatures that will drastically disrupt what we know as normal. In just three decades, temperatures will surpass all records set since they began being kept in 1865, scientists concluded in the study, published in the Oct. 9 issue of Nature. At that point, the coldest temperatures on Earth will be higher than the current hottest temperatures. The researchers argued that if greenhouse gas emissions are stabilized, the catastrophe could be delayed as much as 20 years. In that case, the warming wouldn't reach its full potency until 2069. "Within my generation, whatever climate we were used to will be a thing of the past," lead researcher Camilo Mora said.

Hero Summit

Sen. John McCain spoke at The Daily Beast's Hero Summit Thursday where he said that Obama's foreign policy is in large part to blame for Egypt's downward path to insurgency and terrorism. During an interview with editor-in-chief Tina Brown, McCain asked: "We're going to suspend some aid but not other aid. What is the message to [Egyptian] General [Abdul Fattah] al-Sisi? ... We should abide by our rule of law. But we didn't do that." McCain further emphasized that the shutdown is negatively impacting people's confidence in the government, which could have long-term consequences.

FINALLY

After 22 years, New York police finally identified Baby Hope, one of the city's most famous cold cases. Her name was Angelica Ramirez, the New York Post reported on Thursday. The little girl, believed to have been between the ages of three and five, was found tied up in cooler along a New York highway in 1991, likely having been strangled to death. Police also found evidence of sexual abuse. A tipster recently came forward saying she knew the sister of Baby Hope, and police were able to track down the girl's mother, who said she never reported Angelica missing because she feared her abusive husband. Police are now investigating the girl's father.
