The Commerce Department saw a 4.1 percent annual growth rate in the economy—higher than the 3.6 percent they'd predicted and the biggest gain the U.S. has seen since 2011. Commerce says the change is due to an annual 2 percent growth in spending over the summer—with people making purchases that range from big things like refrigerators to daily and monthly expenses like gas and healthcare. Canada Strikes Prostitution Laws The Supreme Court of Canada ruled in favor of safe working conditions for sex workers, striking down the nation's prostitution related laws in a unanimous 9-0 ruling Friday. The court decided that the laws, which criminalize operating brothels, street soliciting, and living on the profits of prostitution, create dangerous working environments for sex workers and violate Canada's charter guaranteeing life, liberty and personal security. Friday's ruling was historic, as the same laws were upheld by the Supreme Court 34 years ago. Read it at Global News Canada REPRISAL 5. SeaWorld Ad Counters 'Blackfish' Free Willy? They don't think so. SeaWorld Entertainment Inc., the company that owns the Orlando theme park at the center of the haunting documentary Blackfish, has launched an official counterattack. The full-page ad, titled "An Open Letter from SeaWorld's Animal Advocates" ran in eight of the biggest newspapers in the U.S. on Friday, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. The ad does not respond directly to Blackfish—which portrays the captivity of orcas as a disturbing violations of animal rights—but makes an explicit defense of SeaWorld's treatment of its 29 captive whales.
