ONWARD

New York's 109th mayor was sworn in Wednesday promising to enact almost every liberal wish. The Daily Beast's Michael Daly writes that de Blasio's political fate, and to some degree Hillary Clinton's, rests on the NYPD though.

DÉJÀ VU

More than 900 flights for Thursday have already been canceled as the Northeast prepares for a storm system that will unload as much as a foot of snow and have sub-zero wind chills. The weather "will lead to whiteout conditions making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel," said the National Weather Service. New York's Long Island will be under a blizzard warning from Thursday through Friday. Boston is supposed to get five to 11 inches of snow and temperatures as low as three degrees below zero.

Exclusive

The Obama administration is cutting funding for democracy promotion and election support in the Middle East much more sharply than expected, reports The Daily Beast's Jamie Dettmer. Alarmed activists say the White House appears to be giving up on democracy in the region and downgrading its advancement as a policy priority.

MAYBE

Baby steps. Following on the hiring of longtime McCain immigration adviser Rebecca Tallent and his recent comments criticizing the Tea Party, aides say House Speaker John Boehner is now committed to "step by step" reform of immigration laws. While such a plan wouldn't satisfy immigration advocates completely, some see it as the beginning of a deal that would allow Republicans to win over much-needed Hispanic voters. Boehner recently confirmed that he is still opposed to a single, comprehensive immigration reform bill.

OH SNAP

Hackers at a site called SnapchatDB.info exposed the usernames and phone numbers of 4.6 million Snapchat users and posted the info on its website. The hackers, whose website has been taken down, took advantage of a vulnerability in the Find Friends interface, which uses a phone's contacts to find friends on the social network. The hackers claimed they were doing a public service, arguing that tech companies need to place more emphasis on privacy and security than user experience, and issued a statement saying, "Our motivation behind the release was to raise the public awareness around the issue, and also put public pressure on Snapchat to get this exploit fixed."
