PUFF, PASS TO MOM

Two weeks after recreational marijuana stores opened in Colorado, baby boomers are lining up to celebrate. If anyone can decriminalize marijuana in the minds of Americans, it's them. The Daily Beast's Abby Haglage looks at crowds frequenting the state's new weed industry and finds the customers aren't teenage dopers —they're your middle-aged neighbors.

NO LOVE

Jimmy LaSalvia formed GOProud because the Log Cabin Republicans were too liberal for him, but now he's quitting the Republican Party altogether because he says it tolerates bigotry. The lifelong conservative activist speaks to The Daily Beast's Ben Jacobs about going independent after after trying so hard to turn around his old party.

SAFE HOUSE

A 21-year-old Afghan who says he does not believe in God has been granted asylum by the U.K. over fears of religious persecution if he were to return to his conservative society. It's the first time asylum has been granted on the ground of lack of religion in Britain, and comes four years after a man in the Maldives was killed for his atheism after trying to apply for asylum in Britain.

LIVING PROOF

There's new hope for the family of the lone American prisoner of war, Bowe Bergdahl. The U.S. military has obtained a "proof–of-life" video, the first in almost three years. Bergdahl has been held captive since June of 2009 when he was captured in Afghanistan. He is believed to be held by the Taliban-aligned Haqqani network in Pakistan. In the video, he appeared to be in a weakened state, but did make reference to December 14, 2013. "Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has been gone far too long, and we continue to call for and work toward his safe and immediate release," a Pentagon spokesman said.

HISTORY

Is there such thing as texting-triggered psychosis? A Florida woman claims suspect Curtis Reeves harassed her while she was texting during a movie screening around three weeks ago. According to prosecutors, Reeves "glared at her the entire time throughout the movie" and then followed her to the restroom. The 71-year-old retired Tampa police captain allegedly shot and killed Chad Oulson on Monday because he was texting during previews before Lone Survivor. Reeves is being held on second-degree murder charges without bail.
