COWBOY STATE

Liz Cheney announced late Sunday that she is dropping her bid for a Senate seat due to "serious health issues" in her family. She did not go into details. "My children and their futures were the motivation for our campaign and their health and well-being will always be my overriding priority," Cheney said. Cheney had been running as a primary challenger to Wyoming incumbent Mike Enzi, and had raised more than $1 million for the race since July. Enzi has held a persistent lead in the polls, but sources close to the campaign said an incident involving an immediate family member of Cheney's had caused her to drop out.

DIPLOMACY

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry indicated Monday that Iran may be participating in the upcoming peace talks on Syria—the first time there has been any acknowledgment that Iran could play a role. Kerry said Iran could contribute to "the sidelines" and there will be limits to how big a role Tehran could play in helping create a transitional government in Syria. Russia, which has been one of Bashar al-Assad's few supporters, insisted that Iran take part in the negotiations. But France and the U.S. said Iran could only be involved in talks if it is willing to agree to the Syrian president handing over power to a transitional government. Meanwhile, Syrian activists said rebel infighting has spread from the country's north to its east, an area dominated by a group affiliated with al Qaeda.

TANGLED

Jahi McMath, the 13-year-old California girl declared brain-dead after complications from surgery in December, was released from the hospital Sunday for a "destination unknown," or most likely, a treatment center in New York. Jahi underwent surgery on Dec. 9 for sleep apnea, and suffered heavy bleeding, cardiac arrest, and "whole brain death" in the days following the surgery. She was declared brain-dead Dec. 12, and the Alameda County Coroner's Office issued her a death certificate that listed Dec. 12 as her date of death. Jahi's family has protested the hospital's decision to remove her from a ventilator.
