STRANGE BEDFELLOWS
America's most famous retired general is appearing at a most unusual event next week—one that features climate-change deniers and infamous conservative videographer James O'Keefe. It's a rare brush with partisan politics for Petraeus, who has resisted calls to associate himself with both parties. Ben Jacobs and Christopher Dickey report.
HERE WE GO!

The spring thaw is here! The U.S. economy added 288,000 jobs in April, and the unemployment rate fell to 6.3 percent. The jobless rate is now the lowest it's been since the financial-markets crash in September 2008. Analysts expected job gains of 220,000 at most, believing the economy would shake off a winter freeze. The number of unemployed people dropped by 733,000 to 9.8 million—but 806,000 also quit looking. February and March's gains were revised up 36,000 in total.

David Freedlander reports on whether we can look forward to a new United States of Cheese.

Days after reports surfaced about an award granted to Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling despite his racist history, the head of the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP resigned on Thursday. Leon Jenkins was also set to give Sterling a second award before the infamous recording of his racist comments surfaced. Jenkins was indicted on federal bribery, conspiracy, mail fraud, and racketeering when he was judge in Detroit in 1988. And while acquitted, he was disbarred in 1994 by the Michigan Supreme Court, which found "overwhelming evidence" he "sold his office and his public trust."

BUSTED
Republicans and conservatives have lost the battle of the enrollment figures when it comes to the Affordable Care Act. Now, Michael Tomasky writes, they're fabricating figures to say only 67 percent of enrollees have paid premiums.
