Cheat Sheet - Chiquita Banana Blocks Help for 9/11 Survivors

Read This, Skip That ....

June 03, 2014
STRANGE ENEMIES
What does a banana company have against survivors of the Sept. 11 attacks? For years, the conglomerate paid off Colombian militias so it's no wonder Chiquita is now furiously lobbying to stop a bill that would make it easier to sue financiers of terrorism. Tim Mak reports on the shady web connecting the fruit producer with terrorists.
LET'S TRADE
President Obama has spent three years trying to convince the Pentagon and the nation's top intelligence official to release the Gitmo Five in exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. This time around the White House got the answer it wanted when the Taliban was ready to deal, writes Eli Lake, though one military official calls its methods "forcing the consensus."
NOT COOL

Jonah Hill apologized Tuesday for using a homophobic slur when he was approached by a paparazzi. Over the weekend, he told a photographer "Suck my dick, faggot." In an interview with Howard Stern, the 22 Jump Street star apologized. "What I said in that moment was disgusting... I shouldn't have said that." Slightly less endearing was Hill's added self-defense about how he happened to be spending that day with a gay friend who is getting married. Quit while you're ahead, Jonah.

R.I.P.

More than five decades after a home for unwed mothers in western Ireland closed, the bodies of 800 babies have been found in a makeshift mass grave in the property's septic tank. From 1925 to 1961, the Bon Secours nuns in Tuam ran the home for "fallen women" to come and give birth. Local historian Catherine Corless found that there were serious issues of neglect toward the children and many died of tuberculosis, measles, and malnutrition. "If you look at the records, babies were dying two a week, but I'm still trying to figure out how they could [put the bodies in a septic tank]," Corless said. "Couldn't they have afforded baby coffins?" Today a playground stands where the home once did.

BACKFIRE
State Sen. Joni Ernst began as a compromise candidate in Iowa, but attacked the EPA, Farm Bill, and more to woo conservatives. That won't help in an agricultural swing state, argues Ben Jacobs. Ernst, a Sarah Palin clone complete with glasses and a handgun, may cost the GOP an open Senate seat if she wins the upcoming primary.
