Cheat Sheet - Bergdahl Wasn’t a ‘Prisoner of War'

Read This, Skip That ....

June 03, 2014
CHANGING THE SCRIPT
Since Bowe Bergdahl was released Saturday, senior Obama administration officials have been referring to him as a "prisoner of war." But for years they hesitated to use that label in order to sidestep Geneva Conventions protections regarding Taliban prisoners, Josh Rogin reports. Now the POW designation for Bergdahl may give the Taliban a way to claim "prisoner of war" rights for its own men.
THE HUMANE ROUTE
A new study shows that 88 percent of physicians want "do not resuscitate" orders for themselves, yet many ignore those orders for their patients. Russell Saunders argues there are complex reasons for this discrepancy. Watching a patient die without trying to save him runs contrary to doctors' impulse to heal, while others fear being accused of not doing enough to save a person's life.
Heads Up

Fifteen more players have signed up to join in the shaming the National Football League over concussions. Hall of Famer and former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino and 14 other players filed suit last week, adding their names to more than an estimated 5,000 former players suing in more than 300 similar cases. "On information and belief, the Plaintiff… sustained repetitive, traumatic sub-concussive and/or concussive head impacts during NFL games and/or practices," the complaint reads, alleging the league misled players and concealed information. There are efforts to approve a proposed $765 million settlement for concussion litigation.

WHAT A GUY

Donald Sterling's attempts at being a ladies man all seem to spectacularly backfire. We all know how his attempts to woo V. Stiviano worked out, and now an ex-girlfriend has filed a suit against Sterling, accusing him of racial discrimination and sexual harassment. Maiko Maya King alleged in a suit filed Monday that she dated the Los Angeles Clippers owner from 2005 to 2011. She was also employed by him, during which time he spewed "a steady stream of racially and sexually offensive comments" toward her. King claims that Sterling made racist comments to try to get her to leave her husband, who is black. He also made assorted racist remarks, including, "Black people do not take care of their children. All they do is sit at home and smoke dope," and "Mexicans just do drive-by shootings." She also said Sterling "dangled money only if she would have sex with him" and offered monetary reward to "help him to perform sexually." Charming.

national record

It's official: Seattleites will be raking in the country's highest minimum wage soon. Seattle City Council unanimously approved a $15 base wage on Monday with a plan to phase it in over the next seven years. During this transition, some businesses can count tips and health care as part of the $15 minimum wage. It will affect around 100,000 workers in the city. Not long after the vote was announced, the International Franchise Association filed a lawsuit against the plan, calling it "unfair and discriminatory."
