Cheat Sheet - Who’s Murdering Baghdad’s Prostitutes?

Read This, Skip That ....

July 15, 2014
MOB RULE
Someone slaughtered 29 women in a Baghdad brothel last weekend. Officially, the investigation is ongoing but Jacob Siegel reports many Iraqis blame a Shia militia group known as the League of the Righteous. They mete out violent punishment to those guilty of moral transgressions. Worse, they're the good guys to Iraq's sectarian government.
NO FAITH
U.S. intelligence and military leaders think President Obama's plan to pull nearly all troops out of Afghanistan by 2016 is a bad idea after seeing Iraq slip into chaos. Kimberly Dozier and Josh Rogin report a CIA assessment that al Qaeda will be neutralized less than two years from now is too rosy for some. Will the U.S. change course?
HORRIBLE

Multiple subway cars derailed during the Tuesday morning rush hour in Moscow, killing at least 12 and injuring 120 people. A power surge caused the train to suddenly stall, causing some of the cars to be thrown off the tracks. The train became trapped between Slaviansky Boulevard and Park Pobedy stations. One of the passengers described to RT how he was "tossed up in the air" and that "there was blood on the floor, heads bruised, arms broken. Panic broke out." The Moscow metro carries as many as nine million passengers on a work day.

UP IN THE AIR

On Tuesday, the Israeli government said it would accept the terms of Egypt's proposed ceasefire but Hamas rejected the offer and fired several rockets into Israel. In response, Israel resumed airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Egyptian plan was to "give an opportunity for the demilitarization of the Strip—from missiles, from rockets, and from tunnels—through diplomatic means." There was seeming confusion over the ceasefire among Hamas. "We are still in consultation and there has been no official position made by the [Hamas] movement regarding the Egyptian proposal," Moussa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas member, said on Facebook. However, another Hamas official, Sami Abu Zuhr, told the Associated Press he "did not recieve any official draft of this Egyptian proposal" and declared the plan "not acceptable."

BACK-TO-BACK

Yoenis Cespedes sealed a place in baseball history Monday night, earning his second consecutive Home Run Derby win. The Oakland Athletics outfielder is the first player in 15 years to win the competition back-to-back since Ken Griffey Jr. did so in 1998 and 1999. After a stalled start due to a rain delay, Cespedes totally owned the home-run competition in the Minnesota Twins' Target Field. He hammered 28 home runs, out-hitting his final competitor, the Cincinnati Reds' Todd Frazier, 9-1 in the final round. "I don't need to put more of a swing or more of an effort in order to hit a home run," Cespedes, a Cuba native, said through an interpreter. "I just have to look for a good pitch and put a good swing on it, and it usually takes care of it."
