FAIR-WEATHER

While Caliph Ibrahim, leader of the self-declared Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, has taken over large chunks of Syria and Iraq, he's about to get an unpleasant surprise. Jacob Siegel reports from Baghdad that many Sunnis are looking to ISIS for liberation from a corrupt government and say they'll dump it soon after.

BOTCHED

The execution of an Arizona inmate took close to two hours. Joesph Wood died after "gasping and snorting" for hours following his lethal injection. The state attorney general released a statement that "The execution commenced at 1:52 p.m. at the Arizona State Prison Complex (ASPC) Florence. He was pronounced dead at 3:49 p.m." An hour into the execution, Wood's lawyer filed an emergency appeal in an Arizona federal court claiming that his client was "alive and gasping." Wood, 55, had previously tried to fight his execution, claiming the state was violating his First Amendment rights because it would not reveal the source of its lethal-injection drugs.

BECOMING A TREND

According to Algeria's national airline, Air Algerie, the company has lost contact with a plane flying from Burkina Faso to Algiers. The plane, Flight AH 5017, had 110 passengers and six crewmembers. The plane was chartered by Spanish airline Swiftair. Air Algerie says it lost contact with the plane 50 minutes after takeoff. It was supposed to land in Algiers at 5:40 a.m local time.

WEAK

Decorated veteran John Walsh, who was appointed by Montana to be its U.S. senator in February, plagiarized his 2007 thesis paper for his master's degree from the United States Army War College. The New York Times broke the blockbuster story Wednesday. Walsh is now claiming the plagiarism was a result of post-traumatic stress disorder. "I don't want to blame my mistake on PTSD, but I do want to say it may have been a factor," he told the Associated Press. "My head was not in a place very conducive to a classroom and an academic environment." When initially presented with evidence of his plagiarism, the Democrat said, "I didn't do anything intentional here." When asked if he plagiarized, he said, "I don't believe I did, no."

GAPING HOLE

Eric Garner infamously died last week with the hands of the NYPD wrapped around his throat. Mourners flocked to his funeral Wednesday wearing his last words across their chests: "I can't breathe!" Michael Daly reports on the gentle giant killed by cops.
