Cheat Sheet - This Must Be the NCAA’s Last Suicide

Read This, Skip That ....

December 01, 2014
ENOUGH
Ohio State University football player Kosta Karageorge shot himself on Sunday after saying he was 'all f----- up' from a head injury. His mother said he had a "history of sports-related concussions." Karageorge should be a sad wake-up call for the NCAA, an organization even worse at protecting its players' health than the NFL, writes Robert Silverman.
RED CARD
The reasons not to grant Putin the honor of hosting the 2018 World Cup have been mounting all year, but the allegation that Russians bribed a senior soccer official with a Picasso painting should be the final straw. The time is ripe—and right—for action to begin that would divest Russia of the World Cup and award it to another nation, writes Tunku Varadarajan.
URGENT HUDDLES

President Obama will discuss the situation in Ferguson, Missouri, on Monday with his Cabinet, civil-rights leaders, law-enforcement officials, and others. The White House says Obama's Cabinet meeting will focus on his administration's review of federal programs that provide military-style equipment to law-enforcement agencies. The White House says the president will also meet with young civil-rights leaders to discuss the challenges posed by "mistrust between law enforcement and communities of color." He'll then meet with government and law-enforcement officials, as well as other community leaders, to discuss how to strengthen neighborhoods. Protests have continued in Ferguson, but have been more muted than the violence sparked last week by a grand jury's decision not to indict police Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

UNHOLY
Since aligning themselves with the Republican Party, evangelicals have only hurt their cause, writes Jay Michaelson. Gay marriage has become more widely accepted, TV and video games have grown more vulgar, and more Americans have no religious affiliation. Evangelicals are failing because they are trying to solve cultural problems with political solutions.
NOT BUYING IT

Fewer U.S. consumers are willing to do the mad dash to the mall for doorbuster deals as soon as they've finished their turkey. Black Friday weekend shopping disappointed retailers with an 11 percent decline in sales. Consumers spent $50.9 billion over the past four days, a marked drop from the $57.4 billion over the same period last year. To add insult to injury, the overall number of customers fell 6 million short of expected totals, according to the National Retail Federation. 2014 is the second consecutive year that Black Friday sales have slipped. A variety of reasons could contribute to its decline, including a shift to online shopping, which has increased 15 percent this year, and the fear of getting into a physical altercation in the baby section of a department store.
