Uber Driver to Victim: I Made You Happy
According to prosecutors in Chicago, an UberX driver charged with raping an intoxicated female passenger is said to have told her, "I made you happy." The UberX driver, Maxime Fohounhedo, has been barred from driving any sort of taxi while his case is before the court, and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail. The woman says she awoke inside Fohounhedo's apartment as he assaulted her. The woman went the next day to the hospital and was administered a rape kit. GPS coordinates place the victim's phone in Fohounhedo's apartment at the time of the alleged attack.

Cancer Dip Spares 1.5M Americans
A report released Tuesday found that a 22 percent decrease in cancer death rates during the past 20 years has saved the lives of more than 1.5 million Americans, according to the American Cancer Society. The annual report pointed to a decline in U.S. smoking habits, more cancer-prevention awareness, cancer treatment improvements, and advances in early detection practices as the factors behind the death rate drop. The American Cancer Society looked at cancer diagnoses, mortality and survival data to find that the pace of cancer deaths is decreasing in every state, with Northeastern states marking the biggest decrease of 25 to 30 percent. "The continuing drops we're seeing in cancer mortality are reason to celebrate, but not to stop," said John R. Seffrin, chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society.

9 Dead in Rampage in Canada
On Tuesday, seven people, including two children, were found dead at two separate locations in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan, Canada. They were later linked to the murder of a middle-aged woman on Monday evening, as stated at a press conference, when a man allegedly entered a private residence and fired a gun before fleeing. Six additional victims, including the two children, were found at another private residence Tuesday. The suspect was found dead hours later from an apparent suicide at a Vietnamese restaurant. "The investigation is complex and very fluid at this point. None of the victims have been identified at this time." No details on the crime scenes' connections have been released.

AirAsia Jet Found at Bottom of the Sea
Searchers used sonar equipment to locate the plane wreckage from AirAsia Flight 8501 at the bottom of the Java Sea, a search and rescue official told CNN on Wednesday. It's unclear whether the plane remains intact or is broken apart, according to Hernato, the official who goes by one name. As of Wednesday morning, 10 bodies have been recovered off the coast of Borneo as searchers battled strong currents and high winds in their recovery efforts. One of the bodies was a female wearing a flight attendant's uniform, Indonesia's Search and Rescue Chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo told the Associated Press. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash and have yet to locate the plane's black boxes, or cockpit voice and flight data recorders, but have retrieved parts of the jet's interior, a life jacket, an emergency exit door, and a suitcase.

U.S. Softens on Oil Export Ban
With the price of a barrel of oil continuing to plummet, the Obama administration announced Tuesday that it will soften a 40-year-old ban on exports of most domestic crude. The Bureau of Industry and Security has granted permission to "some" companies to sell crude abroad, and has also issued guidance on what kind of oil is allowed to be sold. While the administration said that the steps were "certainly not designed to add or detract from what can be exported, we are trying to make the boundary line clearer," the consensus seems to be that the administration is ready for more U.S. oil to be sold overseas.

South Korean Teacher Made $8M
Talk about a putting your money where your mouth is. South Korea has long had a reputation for emphasizing education, and now it's been reported that one of its top-ranked math teachers, Cha Kil Yong, made $8 million last year. Cha teaches students for the college entrance exam in mathematics at an online "hagwon," or cram school. As a result of its emphasis on education, South Korea is consistently placed high on rankings worldwide for reading, math, and science. However, it also ranks the worst when it comes to student happiness and has one of the highest suicide rates in the developed world.

UN Fails to Pass Palestinian Resolution
A Palestinian-backed resolution to end Israeli occupation failed to pass in the UN Security Council on Tuesday, falling one vote short of the nine "yes" votes required for adoption by the council. The resolution, which called for the end of Israeli occupation within three years, received eight "yes" votes, two "no" votes from the United States and Australia, as well as five abstentions. The U.S., Israel's closest ally, reiterated its stance on opposing the resolution in favor of striking a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine that did not involve a timetable. "We voted against this resolution not because we are comfortable with the status quo. We voted against it because... peace must come from hard compromises that occur at the negotiating table," U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power said.

Sony Used Phone Tree During Hack
Sony Pictures was so crippled by last month's cyberattacks that it was forced to create a phone tree to help employees update one another, person-to-person, about the hack. Sony CEO Michael Lynton said the studio coped with the security breach by using personal cellphones, Gmail accounts, notepads, and also reviving old company BlackBerrys, which operate on a different server. The payroll department even revived an old machine to cut paychecks manually. Hacking group Guardians of Peace stole troves of both company and personal data, including employee salaries and Social Security numbers, as well as leaked movies, internal documents, and emails late last month. The FBI has previously said North Korea was behind the attack, but security experts are investigating whether the company was compromised by former employees.
