From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 12 No. 63 - ISSN: 1533-3698 May 12, 2011

Dear People:

Today, I'm starting a new management development class with about ten newer managers in my company. This is something that Human Resources professionals should be doing more often. We get mired in doing mandatory HR training - and believe me - I do this training, too, because it is essential. But, we largely ignore our magical opportunity to develop the skills of our managers, supervisors, and team leaders in a consistent way. I'm a huge believer in the power of internal, on-the-job training to enhance the skills of our organization leaders. But, the HR professional can contribute so much more... You know the strengths and weaknesses of your managers. You are committed to the mission, vision, and guiding principles of your organization. And, you know how much alignment on these issues will enhance your workplace. Why not consider a big chunk of your role to be skill development? Here's how I approach weekly management training.
