From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 12 No. 59 - ISSN: 1533-3698 May 5, 2011

Dear People:

I've developed a mantra of sorts over the years that talks about what people want from work. I've added and subtracted items from the list, and I've explained them in different ways over the years, but fundamentally, people want:

This doesn't seem to be asking a lot, as far as I am concerned, but I receive emails every day that tell me these factors are not universally available in the workplace. In fact, people tell me regularly that they experience the opposite. I'm working on a possible sixth factor, but so far, I am not convinced that it is not already covered under leadership: the desire of many employees to be part of something bigger than themselves so that they believe their work has meaning. These thoughts go hand-in-hand with today's new lead article, the gold is in reader comments. Be sure to check them out.

Regards and wishing you and yours the best this week,

Susan

What Is Employee Motivation - Really?

Want to encourage and inspire motivation? You need to know what motivation is - really. Motivation is an employee's intrinsic enthusiasm about and drive to accomplish activities related to work. Motivation is that internal drive that causes an individual to decide to take action. You can inspire motivation and tap into it. Find out how.

See Casual Dress for Work

Questions abound about casual dress at work. So, my work dress code and image collection galleries are popular on the site. This photo gallery shows appropriate attire for a casual work setting. In a casual work setting, the dress code allows just about any choice of outfit as long as it is appropriate for work.

10 Tips for Better Teamwork

Have you ever wondered how some work groups exhibit effective teamwork and others remain dysfunctional for the life of the team? Effective teamwork is both profoundly simple and difficult at the same time. The factors that affect success in teamwork occur both within the team itself and in the work environment in which the team must function. The good news? You can get it right.

How to Deal With Rejection at Work

Have you experienced rejection at work? Being rejected is painful, but many instances of rejection are your opportunities for learning, too. Rejection sends a powerful message so you need to make sure that you are reading the right message into any rejection you experience. You can only accomplish these two tasks: learning and responding to the intended message. If you are willing to practice personal courage and seek out feedback following your rejection, you can do both.
