From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 12 No. 136 - ISSN: 1533-3698 October 15, 2011

Dear People:

Lately, I've received a lot of reader stories about being bullied at work. I've wondered if the job market is causing people to stay at jobs that they would quit in a better economy. The reality of this job market is that people with salable skills, such as sales, technology and computer science, are finding jobs whereas people with fewer skills are not. One of the patterns in the stories about bullies is that the person who is being bullied does not perceive that he or she has many options. As the individual may have fewer perceived options, he or she is an easy target for a bully. Another theme in the stories about bullies is that the employees say over and over again that they wished they had stood up to the person sooner. Looking for tools to address bully behavior? I've written about how to deal with a bully at work. Here are additional tools to help you effectively approach necessary conflict. You can assertively deal with a bully at work. In fact, the assertive approach may be the only approach that works - permanently.

See a Sample Human Resources Generalist Job Description

In the past couple of years, I have hired or helped hire a Human Resources Director, two Human Resources Generalists, and three Human Resources Assistants. Probably not a lot of HR people by some company recruiting agendas, but certainly huge for the small to mid-sized clients who are my main client base. In the process, I have interviewed approximately 50-60 candidates; you don't even want to know how many resumes we reviewed. These interviews have affected my opinion of the human resources talent available in the market. Read more.

What Causes Employee Negativity?

Recently, I received an IM from a friend. He has found a new job and was ushered out of his former workplace when he gave his two week's notice. He wanted to tell me just how bad his workplace had been. And, I was truly amazed. The workplace he described took every article on this website and did the exact opposite. Employees were required to account for every minute of their time and a doctor's note was required if they missed one day of work. Find out more about employee negativity.
