From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 12 No. 150 - ISSN: 1533-3698 November 17, 2011

Dear People:

A simple thank you letter, that recognizes specific employee contributions, goes a long way in helping employees feel recognized and rewarded at this time of the year - or any time of the year. For companies that are able to give bonus checks or holiday gifts this year, keep in mind that you can double or triple the impact of your thanks and recognition. An employee recognition letter, that accompanies a bonus check or a gift, magnifies the recognition an employee experiences. Find out more.

Consider PIPs Positively

On the HR site, one particular topic never ends. Almost nothing is as controversial as the performance improvement plan (PIP). I am convinced that this is because most employers use them incorrectly, using them to fulfill legal requirements for documentation to fire an employee. Instead, a PIP can be a powerful force for good.

Best Interview Questions for Employers to Ask

Do you have favorite interview questions that you ask each job applicant at an interview? If so, you're not alone. Seasoned interviewers develop a short list of questions that quickly tell them what they need to know about a candidate's job skills and potential cultural fit. I have my best interview questions, too. Find them here.

10 Tips for the Leader About Building Motivation

You can make their day or break their day. Your choice. No kidding. Other than the decisions individuals make on their own about liking their work, you are the most powerful factor in employee motivation and morale. As a manager, your impact on employee motivation is immeasurable. By your words, your body language, and the expression on your face, as a manager, supervisor, or leader, you telegraph your opinion of their value to the people you employ.

Qualified for HR With a Two Year Degree?

When Human Resources was in its infancy and employees from admin and other departments filled the HR roles in companies, a degree was not the key factor that it is today. As HR has aimed at becoming more professional and leading organizations strategically, a Bachelors degree is becoming essential. Or, so I think. Other readers completely disagree with me.
