The Only Job Search Advice You’ll Ever Need

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 03:45 AM PST

I’m asked for job search advice on a daily basis. It’s not epic. This is what I’ve got.

  1. Get off the computer. The number one way people find a job is through a referral. Then job boards. Then career websites. Go meet someone who can help you find a job. And stop obsessing about your resume. A resume has very little to do with your job search.
  2. The recession is bad for everyone’s ego. The best way to feel okay about taking a job ‘beneath’ you is to have other important and meaningful ways to define yourself.
  3. You can follow your passion. Just don’t let that be an excuse for not accepting gainful employment.
  4. A job is better than no job. Nobody is getting rich in America. According to the US Census Bureau, 46.2 million people were in poverty in 2010. That’s up from 43.6 million in 2009—the fourth consecutive annual increase in the number of people in poverty.

I will also tell you that the number one way to free yourself from the obligation of employment — and have the freedom to choose a path that is aligned with a personal mission — is to stop spending money.

No debt? No boss. That’s how it works.

Or so I’m told. Easier said than done.
