Attendance at work is a long standing issue. The debate rages between whether employees should come to work when they are sick to get the work done, or whether they should stay home to spare coworkers their germs. An easy answer doesn't exist about employee attendance. In a manufacturing-type environment in which every station needs to operate every day, attendance policies are common. This is also true of work environments that have customer facing jobs, where customers go unserved when attendance is poor. In organizations that have embraced PTO or paid time off instead of the traditional paid sick days, paid vacation days, and paid personal days formula, employees think of PTO as all vacation.
