UN Security Council condemns N Korea rocket launch
The UN Security Council has condemned North Korea over its rocket launch last week. The body also threatened Pyongyang with fresh sanctions if it carries out further ballistic missile or nuclear tests.

US physician Kim voted World Bank head
The World Bank has chosen health expert Jim Yong Kim of the US as its new president. The South Korean-born physician will assume the top post at the international development agency in July.

UN cease-fire monitors get down to work in Syria
UN cease-fire observers are set to begin a mission to monitor a fragile cease-fire between government and rebel forces in Syria. The advance team arrived in Damascus late on Sunday.

Karzai: NATO failings led to attacks by Taliban
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has accused NATO of failing to prevent the multiple attacks staged by the Taliban insurgents across Afghanistan on Sunday. NATO says the attacks will not affect its long-term exit planning.

European court faults Russia over Katyn massacre
Russia has been reprimanded for its 'inhuman' handling of a 1940 massacre of thousands of Poles. The European Court of Human Rights said it was unable to issue a complete ruling, because Moscow failed to cooperate.

Norway massacre suspect pleads not guilty
The Norwegian man who confessed to killing 77 people in and around Oslo last year has pleaded not guilty at the start of his trial. It's still not clear whether Anders Behring Breivik is mentally competent.

Former Croatian premier pleads not guilty to corruption charges
A former Croatian prime minister and the country's long-time ruling party have pleaded not guilty to corruption charges. The case is regarded as one of Croatia's biggest since it gained independence.
Religion
No pomp or ceremony as Benedict turns 85
Germany's Pope Benedict XVI turned 85 on Monday, but planned no public events to mark the occasion. Among those wishing him well at the Vatican were expected to be his older brother.
