European Union foreign ministers have said the bloc will impose fresh sanctions on Syria, without publicly providing precise details. Diplomats said the fresh restrictions applied to three people and two firms.

NATO accused of ignoring civilian deaths in Libya
NATO airstrikes in Libya last year killed at least 72 civilians, according to Human Rights Watch based in New York. NATO previously said almost all locations struck during 9,600 raids were "legitimate military targets."

US President Barack Obama has welcomed the beginning of a new phase in the handover of security responsibilities to local forces. Earlier, a senior peace negotiator was shot dead in his car.

RAF suspect denies involvement in 1977 murder
A former member of the Red Army Faction terrorist gang has denied any involvement in the 1977 murder of West Germany's top prosecutor. It was the first time that Verena Becker has spoken at the trial.

Spanish banks agree to set aside more risk provisions
Spain's largest banks have announced plans to use more provisions to cover default risks to real-estate loans. The additional funds come on top of billions already called for by the government in Madrid.

Opel restructuring takes shape, aims to cut overcapacity
German carmaker Opel has unveiled first details of a substantial overhaul to return it to profitability. The GM subsidiary will start a production merry-go-round that could see a factory fall by the wayside.
