Liberia's Charles Taylor sentenced to 50 years
The International Criminal Court has sentenced former Liberian President Charles Taylor to 50 years in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity. He's the first head of state to be sentenced since World War II.

Russia and China have reiterated their opposition to military intervention in Syria, amid international condemnation of a massacre in which more than 100 people died. Meanwhile, evidence of a new atrocity has emerged.

Britain's Supreme Court has upheld a ruling against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, meaning his extradition to Sweden on sex crimes charges is likely to go ahead. The prominent whistleblower can still appeal in Europe.

UN confirms Sudanese troop withdrawal
Sudanese forces have withdrawn from the contested border region of Abyei, the United Nations has said. Sudan and neighboring South Sudan have been embroiled in a violent dispute over the oil-rich region.

Egypt's top prosecutor has charged deposed Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak's sons with insider trading. They are already on trial for corruption with their father.

The European Commission has issued a set of recommendations on how EU member states should organize their finances and fix their economies. Among them are direct bank aid and more time for Spain to rein in its deficit.

None of the eight countries currently aspiring to adopt the single euro currency in the years ahead are meeting the criteria to do so. A fresh ECB report points to numerous incompatibilities still at hand.
