40th ANNIVErSARY

On the 40th anniversary of the law that ended gender discrimination in schools, President Barack Obama reflects on how Title IX shaped a generation of strong women.

Verdict

It took 21 hours for a jury to find the ex–Penn State coach guilty on almost all of the state’s charges. The Daily Beast’s Diane Dimond reports from the courtroom on the wild reaction—and what’s next for Jerry.

OUSTER

Paraguay’s president was voted out of power by the country’s Senate Friday in a move that the ousted leader said left Paraguay “deeply wounded.” Fernando Lugo, a former priest who received support from the country’s poor, was tried on five charges of malfeasance by the Senate. Thousands of supporters took to the streets to support Lugo after legislators overwhelmingly voted to remove him from power, and Vice President Federico Franco was sworn in to the country’s highest office. “A truly shameful act has been committed,” said Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolás Maduro, who called the vote a “new type of coup.”

SI SE PUEDE

Barack Obama’s status as the frontrunner when it comes to the Hispanic vote was affirmed Friday in Florida. In a speech that touted his record on immigration reform and hacked away at Republicans for not doing enough to help immigrants, the president resuscitated some of the “Si se puede” optimism of his 2008 campaign. “The bottom line is the Republican Party has made a mistake of not articulating a legislative agenda as it pertains to immigration,” said former Florida Republican state representative Juan Zapata. “Senator Rubio tried to do something. I think it would have been great if it started a year ago, and I think it would have done the party a lot more good.”

BAILOUT

Spain is set to formally request a bailout for its banks by Monday, Finance Minister Luis de Guindos said. The country needs tens of billions of euros to bolster its beleaguered banks, but Spain has been slow to make a formal request for the funds. Guindos told finance ministers in the 17-member euro zone that they can expect to have his country’s formal request by Monday, calling the process “a mere formality.” Euro-group president Jean-Claude Juncker said Spain needs to “pursue [a] clear and ambitious strategy, which needs to be implemented swiftly and communicated early.” It is not yet known whether Spain’s proposal will include an estimated total of funds needed to salvage its economy.
