The men charged with the rape and murder of a New Delhi woman were "tortured" to extract a confession, a potential lawyer for three of the suspects said Thursday. Manohar Lal Sharma, who is likely to represent three of the suspects, said one 22-year-old was "coerced into admission" and tortured for 10 days. The court ruled Thursday that the charge sheet for five of the suspects needed more scrutiny, and no decision was made on moving the case to a fast-track trial. A sixth suspect, believed to be a minor, is expected to be tried separately. Six men have been accused of brutally raping a 23-year-old New Delhi woman on a bus in December, resulting in her death and sparking a national debate in India about the treatment of women.
