Cheat Sheet - Obama’s Odd Immigration Allies

Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

January 29, 2013
COALITION

As the president unveils his vision for immigration reform, he has some unexpected support from the evangelical community—part of an emerging conservative coalition that supporters describe as "the Bible, the badge, and business." The Daily Beast's John Avlon reports.

MASSACRE

An unthinkable massacre in Syria: activists report that dozens of bodies of men in their 20s and 30s—covered in mud, hands bound, and shot in the back of the head—were found near the banks of a river in a city north of Aleppo. There are reports of anywhere between 50 and 80 bodies in the Bustan al-Kaser neighborhood, a mostly rebel area. A video purported to be shot at the scene shows some corpses stuffed into a metal container, others on the street next to a pickup truck, and civilians in surgical gloves examining the bodies. It's unclear who the people are or why they were killed, though the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights flagged the incident.

NEVER MIND

There was never an explosion at an Iranian nuclear facility. So where did the sensational story come from? The Daily Beast's Dan Ephron investigates.

Doping

The New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez and the San Francisco Giants' Melky Cabrera are among the athletes mentioned in records from Biogenesis, an anti-aging company that may actually have been involved in selling performance-enhancing drugs. The now-closed clinic in Miami was run by 49-year-old Anthony Bosch, who had been investigated for allegedly providing Manny Ramirez with banned substances. The clinic's records mention at least a dozen other star athletes and baseball pros. In a statement, the MLB said: "We are always extremely disappointed to learn of potential links between players and the use of performance-enhancing substances and have been active in the issues that have emerged in South Florida ... Banned substances ... have no place in our game."

PETRAEUS SCANDAL

The White House will go ahead with the nomination of Gen. John Allen as Europe's NATO commander, after the Pentagon cleared him of misconduct Tuesday. The Pentagon says its investigation cleared Allen of any professional wrongdoing in the General Petraeus scandal, particularly in relation to email exchanges between Allen and Jill Kelley. Allen's nomination must be resubmitted to Congress for approval. Also on Tuesday, the White House confirmed that Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will be leaving his post after four years of service.

Getting the Band Back Together

Will Destiny's Child perform together at the Super Bowl this weekend? Conflicting reports have everyone guessing, but fear not. Plenty of other pop groups from the '80s and '90s that have already reunited … and it sounds so good.
