BUTTER FACE

Her restaurants are still packed. The locals are whatever. Paula Deen might be a racist and a bully, but she's really sorry—and her brand could come out unscathed, writes The Daily Beast's Winston Ross.

GUN CONTROL

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been named as the target of a bizarre plot in which an alleged Ku Klux Klan member was trying to sell a mobile radiation device that would shoot a lethal beam at the politician, as well as at Muslims, according to unnamed sources reported in the New York Daily News. Glendon Crawford, a General Electric industrial mechanic, has been charged with working to build a device that could "covertly omit [sic] ionizing radiation strong enough to bring about radiation sickness or death against Crawford's enemies." Sounds bad, but John Duncan in the U.S. Attorney's Office said there was no imminent danger. "It was being closely monitored," Duncan said. "No individual was ever at risk."

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

The world is scratching its head over reports that Kim and Kanye have named their daughter North. Here's everything you need to know about the history of the moniker—and why it won't catch on with noncelebs. By Pamela Redmon Satran and Linda Rosenkrantz.

BECKHAM-MANIA

Who doesn't want to get their hands on David Beckham's biceps? The soccer star caused a stampede reminiscent of Beatle-mania while visiting a university in Shanghai on Thursday. Seven people were injured in the rush to get to Becks, including five security personnel who were reportedly ill-prepared for the chaos and trampled by the crowd as soon as Beckham's car arrived. One policewoman took the "full weight of the crowd," according to a photographer at the scene who saw "a pool of blood coming out of her nose and mouth." Now that the former Manchester United midfielder has taken on a new role as a Chinese "football ambassador," they might want to consider tighter security when Becks next comes to town.

COME ON DOWN

Obama announced today his formal nomination of "the perfect person" to act as the new director of the FBI, "a man who stands very tall (he's 6 feet 8) for justice and the rule of law," James Comey, as the next director of the FBI. If confirmed, Comey will replace Robert Mueller, who has headed the organization for the last 12 years, since a few days before the September 11 attacks. Comey, 52, served from 2003 to 2005 as a deputy attorney general under the Bush administration and is known for his staunch opposition to the warrant-less wiretapping program—unique credentials in light of Obama's recent NSA spying scandal. The former federal prosecutor's background has earned him bipartisan support, which should help his chances of being confirmed.
