QUIT COLD TURKEY

It may seem like an awkward mission for a Baptist pastor, but Jay Dennis is taking on pornography with an Internet campaign urging men to say goodbye to smut—and 'destroy your porn stashes.' The Daily Beast's Winston Ross reports.

REVISIONIST HISTORY

Despite its claims now, the Obama administration has done little to press Morsi's administration to support human rights. Josh Rogin and Eli Lake report. Plus, Mike Giglio on what's next for Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood when the Army's deadline passes.

SO MUCH DRAMA

Everyone is freaking out over rumors that Edward Snowden was on a flight to Bolivia. It all began earlier this week in Moscow, when Bolivian President Evo Morales offhandedly suggested that he might be willing to take in the fugitive American whistleblower. By Tuesday it had spiraled into an international goose chase, with Morales's plane being rerouted on its way back to Bolivia out of suspicion that Snowden was on board. The president's plane just took off from the Vienna airport, where it was forced to land when it ran out of gas, and was reportedly refused entry into French and Portuguese airspace. All this fuss has not made Bolivians happy. "We don't know who invented this big lie," Bolivia's foreign minister said of the Snowden rumors. "We want to express our displeasure, because this has put the president's life at risk."

SMALL BUT SIGNIFICANT

Researchers are celebrating what looks like a major, albeit small, step on the road to finding a cure for the AIDS virus. At an international AIDS conference Wednesday, it was announced that following bone-marrow transplants for blood cancers, two HIV-infected patients in Boston are now virus-free and off their antiretroviral drugs. International AIDS Society president Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, who discovered the virus that causes AIDS, called the Boston findings "very interesting and very encouraging," though at this point it means little for the 34 million around the world living with HIV but not blood cancer and without access to the best doctors or hospitals. The technique used on the two Boston patients is also extremely dangerous—it involves weakening the immune system ahead of the transplant—to the point that it's ethical only if performed on someone already likely to die from cancer.

IN MEMORIAM

Thousands of people gathered at a high school in Prescott, Arizona, on Tuesday night to honor the 19 firefighters who were killed battling raging forest fires in the state. Nineteen purple balloons—one for each firefighter—were released during the ceremony, which had a notably religious tone. Earlier this week President Obama and one-time opponent Sen. John McCain of Arizona put their differences aside to memorialize the fallen fighters. "They were heroes," the president said in a statement, "highly skilled professionals who, like so many across our country do every day, selflessly put themselves in harm's way to protect the lives and property of fellow citizens they would never meet."
