Cheat Sheet - The Obamacare Cock-Up

DEVIL IN THE DETAILS

President Obama is expected to call the Obamacare glitches "unacceptable" in a press conference on Monday—as the Department of Health and Human Services announces they are seeking the "best and brightest" of the tech world to help. Not only was the rollout mess utterly predictable, it's also a sign of the times, writes The Daily Beast's Tina Brown.

SHUTDOWN MESS

Among the loudest GOP voices predicting the shutdown defeat of Ted Cruz were Joe Scarborough and Michael Steele. The ex-RNC chairman tells The Daily Beast's Lloyd Grove we're due for a repeat.

EXPLANATION S'IL VOUS PLAÎT

The National Security Agency spied on ally France, according to a report in Monday's Le Monde—and the U.S. ambassador has been summoned to Paris to explain. According to data from Edward Snowden, the NSA spied on 70.3 million phone calls in France in just 30 days between December 10, 2012 and January 8, 2013—and not all those targeted were terrorists. Oh and one more thing: it's not clear if the spying is still going on. Well, that's going to be a fun meeting. Just think, it could be worse: the NSA apparently hacked into former Mexican president Felipe Calderón's email, according to a report in Der Spiegel on Monday.

HOORAY

It's about time New Jersey got on board with the gay marriage business bonanza. Gay marriage became legal at 12:01 a.m. Monday, and nine couples—seven same-sex and two heterosexual—were married Monday at midnight in Newark, with Senator-elect Cory Booker officiating. As with all weddings, there was some drama and some tears: a protester tried to disrupt the first ceremony by shouting "this is unlawful in the eyes of God and Jesus Christ," while another couple got so emotional that Booker joked "there's a law about making the mayor cry. It's illegal." This was the first time Booker officiated a wedding, with the former mayor saying that he never performed any ceremonies before because "I wasn't going to marry anybody if I couldn't marry everybody."

YOU'RE BOTH AWFUL, GO HOME

Tell us what you really think. The Richmond Times-Dispatch refused to endorse anyone in Virginia's governor's race, saying "we would not urge a family member to vote" for Terry McAuliffe, Ken Cuccinelli, or even third-party candidate Robert Sarvis. That's pretty harsh. The sensational editorial calls out Cuccinelli for having "rigged the process for the Republican nomination" in a scheme that "would have delighted the sachems of Tammany Hall." McAuliffe, meanwhile, is described as only having the nomination because of a "weak bench." Libertarian Robert Sarvis, while having "neither embarrassed himself nor insulted the commonwealth," "lacks the experience the job demands."
