50 YEARS LATER

A famous column by the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Herald Tribune writer Jimmy Breslin first drew attention to Clifton Pollard, a World War II vet who buried President John F. Kennedy on two occasions at Arlington National Cemetery. On the 50th anniversary of JFK's death, The Daily Beast's Michael Daly retraces Pollard's path to his final resting place alongside the president at Arlington. Plus, two of Jimmy Breslin's classic JFK columns, Malcolm Jones on the man who spent his life debunking assassination conspiracy theories, and more of The Daily Beast's full coverage of the anniversary.

EVOLUTION

The Senate's landmark vote on Thursday to limit the filibuster has Republicans issuing apocalyptic predictions, while Democrats insist the rule change was necessary for the body to function. "A deliberate and determined effort to obstruct everything is not normal," President Obama said. The change allows the Senate to cut off debate on presidential nominees with a simple majority, preventing the minority from using the filibuster to hold up confirmations. While the measure was controversial, everyone agrees it's the end of an era for the upper chamber of Congress. The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky says Democrats had no choice but to use the "nuclear option," but that we should prefer the values of the old, democratic Senate.

ACCIDENT

A shopping mall roof collapsed Thursday night in Riga, Latvia, killing 32 people and trapping hundreds more inside. The collapse took place about 5:45 p.m., when the residential mall was packed with after-work shoppers. At least three of the casualties were firefighters who had responded to the scene and were caught in a secondary collapse. Twenty-eight people are now hospitalized, including 10 firefighters. News reports said a garden was being constructed on the roof of the mall, and the soil from the project might have triggered the first collapse. Riga, located in the Gulf of Riga near Finland and Sweden, is the largest city and seaport in the Baltic region.

TOO SOON

Michael Weiner, the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, died Thursday night in New Jersey after suffering from brain cancer. Weiner was credited with years of labor peace in baseball after a long period of conflict, and worked with baseball club owners to establish the most rigorous drug-testing program in professional sports in 2011. Weiner had been undergoing chemotherapy and other treatment for brain cancer, and had lost the ability to walk and use his right arm.

GET A LIFE

Pot's about to be legal in Colorado, but that's not stopping the federal government from making a last-ditch effort to persecute growers in the state. Federal agents from the DEA and the IRS raided pot dispensaries and growing facilities across Colorado Thursday, confiscating piles of marijuana plants and infused drinks. It was the first raid since the Justice Department said it would not interfere with voters' decision to legalize marijuana, which will go into effect on January 1. The U.S. Attorney in Denver said the action was consistent with "recent guidance" from the Justice Department, but did not elaborate further.
