IT'S BAAACK
For decades, mumps was found only in medical textbooks, but thanks to a new anti-vaccination movement, it's returning along with measles, whooping cough, diphtheria, and other deadly childhood illnesses that were believed to be extinct, Russell Saunders writes. More parents seem to forget that vaccines are the best protection we have against the spread of devastating and once-common illnesses. If people stop using them, those illnesses will leave the history textbooks and start appearing on the front pages.
GETTING CLOSER?
Today's announcement from Australian officials of two objects that appear to be from Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 could be the first real breakthrough in the two-week investigation, Clive Irving writes. Most of the Boeing 777 would sink but a wing would float, and one piece of debris appears to be it.
R.I.P.
It's easy to think of Fred Phelps, the former head of the Westboro Baptist Church who died today, as an enemy of the gays but his extreme vitriol helped their cause, writes Jay Michaelson. Phelps made it excruciatingly clear what hate really looked like, and being anti-gay started to look more like a prejudice than a personal opinion.
SURPRISE
No one in Washington is calling for the U.S. to go to war over Crimea and there are plenty of reasons why, at this point, military intervention would be futile anyway, Jacob Siegel reports. If circumstances change, America would find itself ill-equipped to fight Russia.
SHALOM
Hillary Clinton was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the American Jewish Congress last night, and she used the occassion to offer more support of Israel than her old boss did, reports David Freedlander. Clinton left little doubt that she would create distance between herself and President Obama in foreign policy should she seek the White House, vocalizing strong pro-Israel sentiments.
