NEXT STEP
After steamrolling its way through Iraq, ISIS is now surrounding Iraq's largest airfield in Balad. Eli Lake and Josh Rogin report on the vehicles and aircraft on the base in danger of falling into the hands of ISIS. Jamie Dettmer reports from Beirut that the terrorist group may open a third front in Lebanon.
PRIVATE EYES

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled 9-0 that police may not search the cellphones of people they arrest without a search warrant. There are, as is always true for searches, exceptions, such as in the case of child abduction or bomb threats. "Modern cellphones are not just another technological convenience. With all they contain and all they may reveal, they hold for many Americans the privacies of life," wrote Chief Justice John Roberts. "The fact that technology now allows an individual to carry such information in his hand does not make the information any less worthy of the protection for which the Founders fought."

OH NO

The gross domestic product of the U.S. fell at a 2.9 percent annualized rate in the first quarter of 2014, the worst three months since the depths of the recession in 2009. The downward revision by the Commerce Department was not only larger than forecast, but the biggest downward revision since record-keeping began in 1976. The major cause of the slowdown appears to be a drop in health-care spending.

DON'T TREAD ON ME

Saying he is disturbed by President Obama's use of executive orders on everything from immigration to same-sex marriage, Speaker of the House John Boehner said Wednesday that he plans to sue. "The Constitution makes it clear that a president's job is to faithfully execute the laws. In my view, the president has not faithfully executed the laws," Boehner said. It's not clear what the lawsuit will cover, but Boehner said this isn't about beginning impeachment proceedings.
