JUST BREATHE
Liberals hoping for more crazy on the right were rooting for a Tea Party victory in Mississippi's Senate primary on Tuesday night. Their hopes may have been dashed, says Michael Tomasky, but they should be glad the establishment won.
NEXT STEP
After steamrolling its way through Iraq, ISIS is now surrounding Iraq's largest airfield in Balad. Eli Lake and Josh Rogin report on the vehicles and aircraft on the base in danger of falling into the hands of ISIS.
UH OH

Despite pressure from the U.S., Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is rejecting a unity government that represents all of Iraq's ethnic and religious groups. Maliki declared in a speech Wednesday that the push is a "coup against the constitution and an attempt to end the democratic experience." The U.S. has told Maliki he needs to work to have a more inclusive government. Maliki has been accused of using the government to strengthen the Shia majority at the expense of Sunnis and Kurds. Meanwhile, The New York Times is reporting that Iran is sending in drones, military equipment, and supplies to help Maliki against the Sunni insurgents.

CURVE BALL
Just days before European leaders are scheduled to meet to discuss new sanctions on Russia, Vladimir Putin offered a bizarre olive branch. The Russian president, reports Anna Nemtsova, requested the Federal Council repeal the authority it had bestowed upon him to send Russia's military into Ukraine.
STAGE 5 CLINGER

Embattled 22-term Harlem Representative Charles Rangel is leading his primary opponent 47.4 percent to 43.6 percent with 100 percent of precincts reporting. Rangel faced State Senator Adriano Espaillat in a tough, bruising rematch that played out on ethnic and generational lines. Rangel leads by more than 1,800 votes, and now the election hinges on absentee ballots. A total of 2,834 absentee ballots were given out, according to the New York City Board of Election, and they must be received by the board no later than next Tuesday. Speaking at 11:20 p.m on Tuesday, Rangel told the audience, "We don't need a whole lot of numbers to be able to tell you how good we feel, how proud we feel, that we were able to bring together people and cultures from all over the district." In 2012, Espaillat lost by less than 1,100 votes and refused to concede for two weeks.
