White House Plans More Gitmo Transfers The National Security Council announced Tuesday that the White House is planning to transfer even more detainees from the prison at Guantanamo Bay, even after the drama over the prisoner swap to secure the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. "While we do not generally discuss transfers before they take place, we are fully committed to implementing the president's direction that we transfer detainees to the greatest extent possible, consistent with national security and our humane-treatment policy, as we work toward closing the facility at Guantanamo Bay," spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said. Over the last 13 months, 17 inmates have been moved out of Guantanamo, while 149 inmates remain. Read it at Los Angeles Times BEEFING UP 3. Iraq's Terrorists Are Becoming an Army The Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham (ISIS) was so extreme it got booted from al Qaeda. Now, with the fall of Iraq's second biggest city, Mosul, on Tuesday, the al Qaeda offshoot now controls huge swaths of territory. Diane Sawyer Skewers Clinton on Benghazi After relentless questioning from ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer in an interview that aired Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton responded to the Benghazi issue—and tried to have it both ways. "I take responsibility, but I was not making security decisions," she told Sawyer after a long back-and-forth. Clinton said in the interview, "I'm not equipped to sit and look at blueprints to determine where the blast walls need to be, where the reinforcements need to be. That's why we hire people who have that expertise," when asked about security at diplomatic outposts. Sawyer then pointed to the report from the State Department's Accountability Review Board, which Clinton has touted as an example of her action in response to the September 2012 attack. "The mission was far short of standards; weak perimeter; incomplete fence; video surveillance needed repair. They said it's a systemic failure," retorted Sawyer. To which Clinton responded, "Well, it was with respect to that compound." Read it at The Washington Post F- 5. Judge Rules Keeping Bad Teachers Is Unconstitutional A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge ruled Tuesday that key job protections for California teachers are unconstitutional. The Tuesday decision stressed that it is too easy for teachers to acquire tenure (18 months) and too difficult to fire those who underperform, unfairly burdening students who suffer as a result. The lawsuit was brought by the group Students Matter, and was fought by the state of California and two of its largest teacher unions, which argued that poor management is to blame for incompetent educators. If the decision is upheld, California will have to craft new rules for hiring and firing educators. In addition, it could affect the rest of the nation.
