The markets reacted favorably to news that the eurozone has finally reached a deal on its debt crisis. After months of failed negotiations, European leaders agreed to a three-part plan in which banks take 50-percent losses on the Greek bonds they hold, European banks are required to have more money on hand, and the bailout fund is reinforced. Greece will get 100 billion euros in new loans. The Institute of International Finance, which has been negotiating on behalf of the banks, said it was committed to working out an agreement on the debt reductions, but that it would be a challenge to ensure private bondholders will fall in line. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that the decision will "relieve the whole world." Read it at Associated Press SUPER COMMITTEE 3. Dems and GOP Swap Deficit Plans With their Thanksgiving deadline approaching, Republicans and Democrats on the deficit super committee exchanged plans—and the two sides remain far apart. Democrats proposed a plan to cut the deficit by $3 trillion—far more than the $1.2 trillion required—through a mix of tax increases and cuts, including to Medicare and Medicaid. Republicans, however, appear to be sticking to their anti-tax pledge. Their plan cuts the deficit by $2.2 trillion, mostly through cuts and increased government fees for programs like Medicare. Read it at Politico DISASTER 4. Thousands Flee Bangkok Tens of thousands of people are fleeing Bangkok ahead of rising floodwaters. Bangkok's governor has officially called for residents of the three northern districts in the capital to leave, and authorities have declared a five-day holiday to allow people to relocate. "This is the first time I am using the term 'evacuation', the first time I'm really asking you to leave," said the governor. With the capital's regional airport already closed due to flooding, thousands of people flocked to bus and train stations. There are reports of stores rationing food in order to prevent hoarding, and bottled water is running low. Read it at Associated Press MARRIAGE 5. Troops Sue Against Gay Marriage Ban Now that "don't ask, don't tell" is gone, a group of gay service members is filing suit against the Defense of Marriage Act, claiming that the federal ban on gay marriage prevents them from accessing benefits provided by the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Massachusetts Army National Guard Maj. Shannon McLaughlin and her wife are the lead plaintiffs, along with five other troops and two Army and Navy veterans. They plan to file today in federal district court in Boston, the same court that ruled last year that the act is unconstitutional.
