Amazing Animal Sculptures Made From Broken CD Shards

Amazing Animal Sculptures Made From Broken CD Shards

Artist and author Sean Avery has come up with what is without a doubt the single greatest use for old CDs. Cutting up the dics into carefully shaped shards, he pieces them together into spectacular animal sculptures. The shmmering, textural work is decidedly lo-tech, using hot glue and wire frames, but almost certainly labor intensive. The feathers of the hummingbird above, for instance, must have taken some time to piece together. It's delightful, astounding work, and a not-too-subtle jab at the impermanence of media. See many more pictures, after the break.

A Cavalcade of Sci-Fi Characters Await You in this Marvelous Tatooine Mural

What you see above is only a tiny piece of a larger mural done by Ulises Farinas that depicts Mos Eisley -- the most wretched hive of scum and villainy in the Star Wars universe. However, this version of the Tatooine crossroads of ne'er-do-wells is full of characters from other science fiction series. You'll see just about every Star Wars character from the original trilogy in the image, as well as some visitors from Star Trek, Doctor Who, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Simpsons, Predator, Batman, The Wizard of Oz, Fallout, and many more besides. It's a veritable Where's Waldo Lando of Sci-Fi goodness.

Nothing to See Here, Just an Earth-Sized Tornado on the Surface of the Sun

Nothing to See Here, Just an Earth-Sized Tornado on the Surface of the Sun

In early February, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured footage of whirling tornado-like storm on the surface of the sun. This enormous mass of plasma raged for over a day and was estimated to be larger than the Earth. Of course, it's not a tornado in the same way that we understand them here on Earth. It's obviously way bigger, way more terrifying, and way weirder.

The Company That Owns the "iPad" Name Made iMac Knockoffs

In case you weren't aware, Apple is currently engaging in a bitter dispute with the Chinese company Proview over who owns the rights to the "iPad" name. Turns out that Proview, which has been semi-defunct for quite some time, produced something called an Internet Personal Access Device or iPAD. It certainly doesn't look like a tablet computer, but it certainly does look like a cheap iMac knock off.
