ISAF commander plans to send troops east
The US officer in charge of the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, General John Allen, has said he expects heavy fighting in eastern Afghanistan in the coming months. He said troops would be reassigned accordingly.

German and Swiss officials have signed a revised treaty designed to combat tax evasion. Berlin hopes the deal will generate billions of euros in revenue. But opposition parties could still scupper the agreement.

The man chosen by Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood to run for president in next month's election has officially registered as a candidate. He has pledged to introduce sharia law to the country if elected.

West African military leaders meet on Mali
Top generals from Mali's West African neighbors have convened in the Ivory Coast to discuss a possible intervention. A contingent of 2,000 troops has been put on standby, though it's not clear for what purpose.

Specialist team flies to stem North Sea gas leak
The French oil giant Total is sending specialist crisis engineers to look at its leaking North Sea Elgin gas platform. It is hoped that the team will find a way to eventually plug the well.

Goods made in Germany have lost nothing of their attractiveness on global markets despite ongoing financial worries. German exports picked up again in the final quarter of 2011, as fresh data show.
