From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 13 No. 63 - ISSN: 1533-3698 May 29, 2012

Dear People:

Why Facebook? Why not? You may become as addicted as the rest of the people I know to keeping up with family and friends, following topics of interest, and participating in family and friend discussion groups. I also have a page for About.com Human Resources. There, some readers comment on the wall, others ask questions and seek resources. I post links to interesting content that I might not otherwise feature on the HR blog almost every day. It's a quick, sure way of sharing and communicating. Why not visit and like the HR page?

I trust that your Memorial Day weekend was happy and that you are back to work refreshed and ready to go. No one cares more than you do about your career and job - honestly. I spoke at length with a writer who was developing an article for Positively Successful Magazine. I realized as I spoke with her that the importance of every employee developing his or her own career path is not emphasized enough in organizations. So, why not make the time you invest in work and your career significant? I can't stress the importance of taking charge of your own personal and professional development enough. Read more...

Do you know that I write a new blog post every day? Check out the blog in the center column on my home page.

Please forward this newsletter, in its entirety, to your colleagues, coworkers and friends, because you want to add value to their work and lives.

Regards and wishing you and yours the best this week,

Susan

Perhaps it helps that I am constantly on the lookout to catch organizations doing something great so I can share it with you, but I do stumble upon ideas frequently. So, I found employee recognition in the credits of a dragon movie. Read more...

What People in Organizations Need

Trust is right up there with communication when I identify the most powerful opportunities organizations have to build relationships with their employees. Unlike communication, which an organization can always improve, trust, when broken, requires significant damage repair. When communication needs improvement, most organizations assume employees want more. That's not necessarily so. Read more...

20 Dumb Things Organizations Do to Mess Up

Even the best organizations periodically make mistakes in dealing with people. They mess up their opportunity to create effective, successful, positive employee relations. They treat people like children and then ask why people fail so frequently to live up to their expectations. Managers apply different rules to different employees and wonder why workplace negativity is so high. Read more...

Business Travel and Your Image

Appearance at trade shows and when employees travel for business, representing the company, is covered by a dress code in most companies. Suits are de rigueur in business meetings and many companies supply polo shirts or cotton button downs with the company logo for people who work the sales booth at a show. For several employees I've encountered over the years, personal expression was more important than the company's professional appearance requirement. This didn't fly... Read more.
