Germany has joined a growing number of countries to expel senior Syrian diplomats following the Houla killings. Kofi Annan, meanwhile, expressed "grave concern" over the bloodshed in talks with President Bashar Assad.

Fifteen people killed in second Italy quake
At least 15 people have been killed in the second earthquake to hit Italy in just over a week. The 5.8-magnitude quake struck near the Italian city of Modena, sending panicked residents rushing into the streets.

Al Qaeda's second in command in Afghanistan has been killed in the country's east near the border with Pakistan. Saudi Sakhr al-Taifi was said to have directed attacks on NATO and Afghan troops.

Danish security services arrest two terror suspects
Authorities in Copenhagen have announced the arrest of a pair of "Danish citizens of Somali origin," saying that the two brothers were planning a terror attack. One was said to have been trained at an Al-Shabaab camp.

Germany's grid operators have announced plans for a major expansion of the network. The move is seen as key part of the country's goal of ending the use of nuclear energy in 10 years' time.

Spanish retail sales post historic drop amid recession
Retailers in Spain have experienced the biggest monthly drop in sales since relevant statistics became available back in 2003. The sharp decrease in April goes hand in hand with fears of a protracted recession.
