| | August 11, 2012 | | Campaign 2012 1. Did Romney Just Go Nuclear? Mitt Romney officially announced Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate during an appearance in Virginia this morning, promising a "positive governing agenda that will lead to economic growth"—and providing the Obama campaign with new lines of attack based on Ryan's controversial budget-slashing plans. Howard Kurtz, Paul Begala, and more Daily Beast contributors weigh in on the game-changing pick. Plus, see the awkward high school photos of Ryan making the rounds on Twitter! GOP Mitt Romney officially announced Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate during an appearance in Norfolk, VA. Appropriately, the announcement took place in front of the U.S.S. Wisconsin, named for Ryan's home state. Though he mistakenly introduced Ryan as “the next president of the United States,” Romney said of his new running mate, “He internalized the virtues and hardworking ethic of the Midwest.” Romney also said of the pair, ‘We are offering a positive governing agenda that will lead to economic growth.” When Ryan finally took to the stage, he said, “Next January, our economy will begin a comeback with the Romney Plan for a Stronger Middle Class that will lead to more jobs and more take home pay for working Americans.” FOUNDING FATHERS David Barton has been a hero to the right for claiming the founding fathers wanted a Christian nation. But now even his conservative peers are disowning his work, reports The Daily Beast’s Michelle Goldberg. TROOPS An Afghan employee at a military base in southern Afghanistan attacked three U.S. Marines on Friday night. Earlier the same day, Afghan police killed three other U.S. special forces soldiers. Since January, NATO has recorded 26 rogue attacks—called "blue on green" shootings—by Afghan forces on foreign troops, but a spokesman said the most recent killings don't count because the shooter was not a member of the Afghan security forces. "Let me clearly say that those two incidents clearly do not reflect the overall situation here in Afghanistan," said NATO's chief spokesman. "We have almost 500,000 police and soldiers working together, side by side, enhancing their trust and enhancing their cooperation in order together to fight for a better future for this country." HOUSING New York City is working overtime to accommodate its homeless population, which has increased significantly over the past year. In just two months, the Bloomberg administration has opened nine new shelters, catching some of their new neighbors completely off guard. Instead of notifying the neighborhoods that shelters were moving in, the city government exercised its emergency authority to transform at least two Upper West Side residential buildings—formerly used as illegal hotels—into homeless shelters. While City Hall isn't necessarily required to get community approval before shelters are opened, they are obligated to notify tenants and neighbors ahead of time. | |
