EAT MORE WORDS

Fast-food chain Chick-fil-A says it posted a record sales day yesterday as supporters of the company’s stance on “traditional marriage” flocked to the chicken retailer for “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.” Writing anonymously at The Daily Beast, one of the company’s gay employees speaks out about her fears of being fired, her attempts to make salads and wraps “extra-gay”—and why she’s urging her friends not to boycott.

THAT’S IT

That’s a wrap. Kofia Annan has resigned as the U.N. and Arab League envoy to Syria, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday.  The news comes after several condemnations and peace plans that have done little to stop the violence rocking the nation.  On Thursday Syria rebels marked the first time they’ve used heavy governmental weapons to on Bashar al-Assad’s regime, attacking a military airbase in Aleppo. The Syrian army, meanwhile, has been amassing troops in Aleppo, raising concerns of an all-out civil war.

OLYMPICS

Eight female badminton players were caught deliberately trying to lose Olympic qualifying matches Tuesday. And in China—where the sport is a national obsession and its top-ranked player is a superstar on par with Michael Jordan during his NBA heyday—the scandal has been devastating, writes The Daily Beast’s Dan Levin.

WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS

The streak continues. Gabby Douglas became the third consecutive American female gymnast to win the all-around competition at the Olympics Thursday, securing the gold medal over Russian rivals Viktoria Komkova, who won silver, and Aliya Mustafina, who won bronze. Team U.S.A.’s other competitor, Aly Raisman, finished fourth, after tying for the bronze with Mustafina and losing a tiebreaker based on execution score.

ATE MORE CHICKEN

Following the intense backlash fast-food chain Chick-fil-A received when its president publicly took a stance against gay marriage, supporters of “traditional marriage”—and fried-chicken sandwiches—spoke with their dollars. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee dubbed Wednesday “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” encouraging patrons to rally around the company and its beliefs. After throngs of customers flocked to the chicken retailer, the company says it set a sales record, though it won’t release official sales numbers.
