Syrian rebels gained ground in Aleppo on Thursday after a week-long battle for the country’s commercial capital, capturing a government tank and turning it on a military airbase. Meanwhile, in the capital Damascus, troops reportedly executed at least 35 people, most of whom were unarmed civilians, according to residents and activists organizations. Sources told Reuters that President Obama issued a secret order earlier this year allowing the CIA to aid rebels in their fight to oust President Bashar al-Assad, though the U.S. government would not arm the opposition. THIS IS PERSONAL Redemption for the most-decorated Olympic athlete ever? Michael Phelps faces off against U.S. teammate Ryan Lochte in Thursday night’s 200-meter individual medley. In their last, hyped meeting, Lochte delivered a crushing blow and won gold, while Phelps could only muster a fourth-place finish. Lochte qualified first for Thursday’s final, while Phelps was only 98-hundredths of a second behind in third place. Phelps, who’s retiring after this Olympics, is chasing another record: one more individual gold would make him the first male swimmer to win an event in three consecutive Olympic games. Shortly before the race, Lochte will try to win the 200-meter backstroke as well. PENN STATE Convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky has put in his two cents about the NCAA penalties issued against Penn State’s football program, calling them “unjust.” Sandusky’s defense attorney Joe Amendola delivered Sandusky’s message to the Associated Press in a phone interview Wednesday, saying Sandusky maintains his innocence and is adamant that the idea that school officials engaged in a cover-up is “ridiculous,” even if people believe he’s guilty of sexually abusing young boys. Amendola also confirmed that Sandusky has requested to be removed from solitary confinement. “He continues to believe that the truth will come out at some point, and that he’ll get another trial or another opportunity to establish his innocence,” Amendola said, adding that he expects a sentencing in September, though no date has been officially set. Meanwhile, Sandusky has been writing a statement to read to the judge at his sentencing that will address all of his charges. | |
