KNOCKOUT

After the president’s calamitous performance on Wednesday night, historian Simon Schama asks if Obama has it within himself to turn things around.

New and Improved

Maybe President Obama is right and the new Mitt Romney really is an “imposter.” Romney reversed his position on his now infamous “47 percent” comment on Fox News on Thursday night. “Now and then you’re going to say something that doesn’t come out right,” Romney said. “In this case I said something that’s just completely wrong ... This whole campaign is about the 100 percent. When I become president, it’ll be about helping the 100 percent.” Previously he had said that the comments were “not elegantly stated” and “off the cuff.”

RUMBLE

The presumed adversaries will face off at the “Rumble in the Air-Conditioned Auditorium” this weekend. But a survey of their past conversations shows that their relationship is as filled with sexual tension and admiration as it is with antagonistic fire, writes The Daily Beast’s Kevin Fallon.

Benghazi Attack

Two suspects have been detained in Istanbul in the killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three others, Turkish television reported Friday. The suspects are being described as Tunisian citizens, and officials decided to hold them after they tried to enter Turkey using fake passports. Four Americans, including Stevens, were killed last month when gunmen stormed the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Desperate

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said Friday that his country needs the next block of international aid, warning that Greece cannot manage past November. Telling a German newspaper that “the key is liquidity,” Samaras said that “the next credit tranche is so important for us.” The Greek economy is hanging on by a thread, he said, and it can only last “until the end of November. Then the cash box is empty.” He also suggested various means of helping, saying the European Central Bank could lower interest rates on Greek debt holdings.
