Merkel has met with the Greek prime minister in Athens amid further speculation about Greece's position in the eurozone. There were scenes of violence outside as protesters vented their anger over austerity measures.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has thrown its support unambiguously behind Turkey, after the latter responded militarily to an attack from Syria. But NATO also called for conflict to be avoided.

Austrian skydiver attempts record-breaking freefall
In a skydive set to start 23 miles (37 km) up and end in the desert of New Mexico, an Austrian man is hoping to break a freefall record that has stood for over 50 years.

Frankfurt book fair opens
The world's largest book fair has opened with 7,300 publishers attending. New methods of publishing are a hot topic at the five-day meeting, with New Zealand selected as the country taking center stage.

EU financial transaction tax finds enough supporters
Four more European nations have thrown their weight behind the introduction of a financial transaction tax. Procedures to initiate such a levy in some countries of the 27-member bloc now seem a mere formality.

IMF's global outlook clouds over
Ahead of an annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, the IMF released its latest World Economic Outlook. The report predicts global economic growth will slow down through 2013.
