New details: Prior to the worldwide security alert that temporarily shuttered U.S. embassies throughout the Middle East earlier this month, authorities captured an al Qaeda courier who had in his possession a recording of a seven-hour Internet-hosted meeting between more than 20 senior al Qaeda leaders from around the globe, U.S. intelligence officials tell The Daily Beast's Josh Rogin and Eli Lake.

OBIT

Elmore Leonard, the bestselling crime novelist and author of Hollywood screenplays such as Get Shorty, Be Cool, and Out of Sight, died Tuesday. He was 87. Leonard died from complications of a stroke he suffered three weeks ago, his researcher wrote on Leonard's Facebook page. The Daily Beast's Malcolm Jones pays tribute to the cool king of crime fiction.

North Korea has been making meth for export for years, but according to a study in the journal North Korea Review, the country has begun getting high on its own supply. The study says that between 40 percent and 50 percent of the population in northern areas of the country is addicted to crystal meth, though good data are hard to come by. It's not the first time a drug meant for export has become a problem: opium abuse was once widespread, but when the fields died in the mid 2000s the country switched to meth, and now production has shifted from state-run factories to home kitchens.

A 21-year-old German student interning for Bank of America's London office was found dead Tuesday morning after reportedly working for 72 hours straight. Moritz Erhardt apparently suffered from epilepsy and collapsed in the shower of his student housing, after, according to posts from colleagues on an Internet forum, working until 6 a.m. three days in a row. An anonymous banker attested to The Independent that "interns can regularly clock up to 100 or even 110 hours a week," and another spoke of the "magic circle," in which interns go home at 7 a.m. to shower and change before returning to the office. The head of communications for Bank of America and Merrill Lynch said the company is "deeply shocked and saddened by the news" and cautioned against speculation.

'N Sync to the Backstreet Boys: two can play at this comeback game. The onetime double-platinum boy band plans to make a triumphant return to the stage with a performance Sunday at the Video Music Awards, says the New York Post. "Justin Timberlake and his former ... band members are set to reunite for a special performance on the VMAs Sunday night at the Barclays Center," reads the MTV announcement. The band's leader turned solo artist, actor, and Jay Z's BFF, Justin Timberlake, will perform independently before being joined by his former bandmates. Timberlake, whose new album, The 20/20 Experience, came out this spring, will also be receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the event. Don't get too excited, super-fans, the boys will be saying bye, bye, bye for good after the night ends.
