Cheat Sheet - Congress’s Cocaine Cowboy

Today: Hip-Hop Conservative Rep. Trey Radel Charged With Cocaine Possession , White Supremacist Executed , 10 Egyptian Soldiers Killed
Cheat Sheet: Morning

HIP-HOP CONSERVATIVE

Someone had to distract us from Rob Ford. Florida Rep. Trey Radel will be arraigned Wednesday on misdemeanor charges that he attempted to buy cocaine in Washington, D.C. The Tea Party favorite, who described himself as a "hip-hop conservative," tweeted at the end of October that he "had some fun in the past few wks." Within hours of the charges, Radel issued a statement apologizing to his wife and son, and saying he "struggles with the disease of alcoholism." He could face up to 180 days in jail and fine of up to $1,000—but his political future is now anyone's guess.

FACE-OFF

The current president will on Wednesday present the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the former president at JFK's gravesite—but Obama is the one who needs Clinton as his life raft, writes The Daily Beast's Eleanor Clift. If the two can see through their personal—and personality—differences, they can both benefit Hillary, who is now a bystander in the awkward dance between Obama and Clinton. "Clinton can't say it, not yet, but he thinks Hillary will be a better president than Obama, heck, maybe better than he was," writes Clift. That means Bill might need Obama to help Hillary as much as Obama needs Bill to save his own presidency.

MISSOURI

Joseph Paul Franklin, the white supremacist convicted of eight murders, was executed Wednesday morning after a Missouri court refused to grant a stay. Franklin had been granted the reprieve after a lower court claimed Missouri's lethal-drug dispute must be solved before he could be executed. The state has been debating the use of the drug pentobarbital after European drugmakers refused to ship propofol, the current drug used in executions. Franklin was also convicted of shooting both Larry Flynt and civil-rights leader Vernon Jordan.

DEADLY

At least 10 Egyptian soldiers are dead and dozens more were injured Wednesday when a car bomb exploded near the north Sinai city of el-Arish. No group has taken responsibility for the attack, but the region has grown increasingly unstable since Hosni Mubarak's ouster in February 2011. The current army-led government launched an offensive against Islamic militants in Sinai in September, and more than 100 members of security forces have been killed in recent months in the region. The soldiers were on their way back to Cairo for leave.

TRAGEDY

Virginia State Senator Creigh Deeds's 24-year-old son, Austin, was turned away from a psychiatric hospital because of a lack of beds on Monday—one day before he allegedly stabbed his father during an argument and then fatally shot himself. Austin Deeds, once a campaign volunteer for his father, had dropped out of college last month and a magistrate had issued an emergency custody order Monday after Austin Deeds had been evaluated by officials at the Rockbridge County Community Services Board. Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened between the two men early Tuesday morning, before Creigh Deeds was spotted on his driveway in Bath County, bleeding from the head and chest.
